Exciting Twitter news, brands! We have the answer to the question – is Twitter’s 140 character limit changing?

The answer is “yes”. The social network is expanding the 140 character tweet, giving brands more flexibility to engage and exchange information with their audience.

In the coming months, Twitter will make changes to simplify your tweets allowing users to express even more in 140 characters. Usernames, quoted tweets, photos, and other media attachments (like GIFS, photos, videos and polls) will no longer be counted as part of your 140 characters, giving users – and advertisers – the opportunity to post longer messages and include more multimedia.

How Is Twitter’s 140 Character Limit Changing?

Take a look at the new updates expected to roll out in the next few months:

  1. @names in replies: Twitter says that @names will no longer count toward the 140-character count. This will make having conversations on Twitter easier, with more character available; no more penny-pinching your words and characters.
  2. Media attachments: Attachments like photos, GIFs, videos, polls, or Quote Tweets, will no longer count as characters within your Tweet, making more room for overall engagement.
  3. Retweet and Quote Tweet yourself: This is brand new. Previously, users were unable to Retweet or Quote Tweet themselves; now, you’ll be able to engage with past tweets you’ve sent.
  4. Goodbye, .@: Twitter will soon ditch the “.@”, something that users currently use to broadcast Tweets more broadly. These changes will help simplify the rules around Tweets that start with a username.

Todd Sherman, Senior Product Manager at Twitter, wrote in a recent blog post that in addition to the above changes, Twitter has plans to help users and brands get even more from Tweets, all without compromising the unique brevity and speed that make Twitter the best place for live commentary, connections, and conversations.

Keep an eye out as these changes are expected to launch for all users in the coming months.
